The Traveling Rose
I went down to my local Safeway store and bought a long stemmed Rose. It came in a slim, elegant, white box with tissue paper all around it. It cost me four dollars.
I took it home, took the rose out of its box and sandwiched it between two pieces of wax paper which I place in the middle pages of a huge dictionary.
I had seen a hundred year old book once, in my parents library of books against the wall. In between its fragile pages was a dried wildflower in wax paper. It still looked pretty good. You could see all the colors and the leaves still had a tint of green.
I didn’t have a hundred years to wait so I was trying to flatten the rose in between the pages of the large dictionary. This didn’t work out so good. The large fleshy bulb was too meaty. It just squished open like a cherry tomato bomb.
I took the rose out of the dictionary and placed it between two pieces of plywood I found out in the garage and got on my knees and pushed down hard as I could. This still wasn’t working very well so I got a hammer and started smashing on the board.
This took me way back to when I was a little kid. I would spend all day smashing bugs with a hammer into the soft mud. When my parents got back in the evening from work they could see hundreds of holes all over the yard, one inch deep, circular in diameter. My mom would come up behind me and see a dead bug at the bottom of every hole. “Oh God no Johnny! Oh God no!” she would say.
I looked in horror at the hammer I now had in my hand and wondered if it was the same hammer I had used so many years ago.
I picked up what was left of the rose and placed it back in its box. I arranged the pedals that had fallen off of it around it and fluffed up the white tissue paper. I composed the love card and got the package ready to send. The rose looked pretty bad, I knew that. You could still tell it was a rose though, it wasn’t like I was sending dirty socks or anything. The dang thing had cost me four dollars. #shortstoriesofinstagram #comicart #funnyshit #writers #creativeartist
