What do I tell them when I’m a bad advocate
I was so excited when I got the message from @embarkvet
that his breed results were in. It was no surprise to us that the larger majority was American Pit Bull Terrier. I loved the results and share them with everyone I knew that wanted to hear. My mentors and friends in the dog world already suspected the results. But some of my family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and acquaintances were surprised.
. “How could such a good boy be part pit bull” they would ask. Eventually their minds would change for the better and worse. At first I was glad their opinion had changed. But that changed when suddenly a lot of “pibble” and bully content was sent my way. Videos that might seem “cute” and “adorable” to the uneducated but seemed irresponsible and dangerous to me. .
This has only increase since the BSL drama in Denver has happened. I’m often tagged or shared pit bull articles, blog posts, and memes. I’ve had friends share pictures of Brody and their young children snuggled up together tagged with “it’s how you raise them” in Facebook comments. In reality my beliefs don’t match theirs. Which I’m currently struggling with.
I’m a firm believer in genetics. I don’t believe in calling them pibbles, land sharks, or hippos. I also don’t believe you can love their problems away or the whole “how you raise them” rhetoric. Not everyone should adopt a bully mix from a shelter. At the same time I don’t agree with BSL or the stigma. Even though we live in a “progressive” city, we still have to deal with stigma. I want to advocate for these breeds. But I don’t think you can be a good advocate without recognizing their characteristics and genetics. .
My question is how do I explain this to the average person I love my community outside of the dog world but also want to stay true to my beliefs. What is the fine line between an advocate and an annoying killjoy
